Reasons Why These Specialty Surfactants are So Special

Along with commodity surfactants, specialty surfactants are mostly used as co-surfactants. In several domestic and industrial applications, they are a fundamental ingredient. Specialty surfactants generally remove stains and dirt from the surface being cleaned.

These products are used in conditioners, shampoos and body washes. They are usually extracted from oleochemical sources and petrochemicals. The sorbitan oleate is very popular.

Different types of specialty surfactants-

- Non-ionic Surfactants- These surfactants are quite resistant to deactivation in water with a high mineral content as they have no charge; as a result, they are particularly efficient grease removers.

- Cationic Surfactants: In terms of volume and value, cationic surfactants form one of the smallest surfactant categories. They are used mainly in hair conditioners and in rinses.

- Anionic Surfactants: These products are widely used in shampoos and carry negative charges. They can be found in the form of sulphosuccinates, polypropylene glycol, sulphonates, etc.

- Amphoteric Surfactants- Based on the pH of the solution they are placed in; these products have a varied charge. They are frequently used in skin cleansers, shampoos, and other cosmetics and have excellent dermatological properties.
Why there is need of green specialty surfactants?
As these specialty surfactants are biodegradable and environment-friendly they are facing many environmental concerns over it. The consumer desire for 'green' products from the consumer is increasing which have created an uncertain market.

Some of the green surfactants that are available in the marketplace are amidoamine, quats, amphoteric surfactants and alkoxylates. They usually come in a combination Generally they are combined with conventional surfactants and powder polyethylene glycol. But the drawback faced by them is their high prices. Due to this reason these products are currently available in a very niche segment i.e. some natural brands.
Specialty surfactants work by keeping the dirt in a water solution to prevent it from being re-deposited onto the surface it was removed from. These surfactants are capable of dispersing non-water-soluble contaminants, which is why they are used in addition to water for cleaning purposes.

The increased popularity of environmental restrictions imposed on the manufacturing process and using green products are the main hurdles for the specialty surfactants market.
