Dharavi: Co-Production + Scaled Transformations

The focus of this project was enabling a process called 'Co-Production', a strategy which puts conflictual collaboration at the center to allow negotiation between parties not normally on the same page, with the goal of reaching a consensus that is win-win for all involved. Our main concentration here was on the role of the residents of Dharavi and of the NGOs dedicated to their cause, and how to enable them to have a voice and platform for negotiation.

Completed at University College London.

In order to ensure all voices from within the vast Dharavi community were heard, a system of focus groups was developed around the types of people found within the slum (Industries & Live/Work, Young People, Shop Owners/Commercial, Transient People, Religion & Culture, and Women & Children). These focus groups would be present in each nagar (or neighborhood), and would meet together to form a larger archetypal group. Representatives from each of these would meet to form groups for each sector, and representatives of each sector would form the Dharavi-wide negotiation group, representing the interests of all members of Dharavi society

Representative groups of each of the resident-identified sectors.
These sector groups are made up of members from neighborhood groups (which in turn are comprised of user groups reflecting the variety of the population)
The sector groups network and collaborate to form a single Dharavi-wide representational group which can push the interests and need of the entire Dharavi population at a negotiation table, giving the community members a voice in the redevelopment process.

Strategies for a more inclusive redevelopment plan better reflecting and incorporating the realities of the current residents' every day lives which could be pushed for at the negotiation table, and folded into further plans and actions.
