Assembly Park: A Public Park
Foreign Domestic Workers (FDW) are the people that help take care of our homes, children and elderly. They are a vital part of society, as it is with their aid in our homes and our lives, that Singapore has thrived to become the progressive country it is today. However, many of the FDW are homesick, discriminated upon and/ or even abused, with 1 out of 5 FDW prone to mental health problems. Thus, It is important to help these FDW feel that they belong and be integrated into society.
There are numerous of social enclaves where the FDW go to during their off days, one of which is at the Guillemard road open space beside City Plaza. This is where most of the Indonesian FDW, which accounts for the majority of the FDW in Singapore, go to congregate and gather. Today, the chosen site is bare with little facilities to offer, with only its uneven patches of grassy areas, concrete pavements and natural shade from the trees barely meeting the basic needs of gathering for the FDW. Furthermore, the site itself has an inherent problem of not being able to provide attraction and purpose for other users, especially during the weekdays. Therefore, the intention of this project is to bring people together by enhancing the open space to make the experience of the FDW more enjoyable and more comfortable, while also creating a point of attraction to draw in the local community. Through this objective, it will help make the FDW community feel a sense of belonging and it will help foster more connections and integration between the FDW and the local community.
