Madarasa of Khwaja Mahmud Gawan

The Madarasa at Bidar is a distinguished example of Bahami architecture (Persian style) built in 1472 AD by Khwaja Mahmud Gawan, the minister of Muhammad Shah III (1463-82). It was functioning like a residential University.  It comprises of a conventional quadrangular hall and chambers on all sides. This three storied building houses a moaque, a library, a lecture hall, Professor's quarters and student's cubicles. The library that existed on the other side of the wing is now destroyed.

 The facade is adorned with multicolored tiles in green yellow and white in a variety of designs. Even though the building suffered much damage due to explosion of gun powder in 1695 CE it still retains much of the original architecture.

It is the only one of its kind in India.
