MAKING: resin vol. 1

MAKING: resin vol. 1

I am a designer maker who celebrates the culture of online DIY skill-share. It means I'm not interested in creating a finished product but rather to develop a template for a process that can be followed by others to create similar objects but different designs. In other words, I like providing people with information instead of stuff.

I experimented with clear polyester resin that can be purchased inexpensively when obtained directly from fibreglass suppliers. In this case I was interested in how hobbyists can use plastic for small-scale production with little initial investment. Resin casting could be the answer but if you google “resin diy” then all you get is jewellery made in pre-manufactured moulds, paperweights, encapsulating biological specimens, or boat repairing, but nothing truly exciting product-wise.

I instantly thought of making lampshades and desk organisers, in other words resin components that need to be hollow. From the beginning I set myself a restraint only to use thick paperboard to make the moulds for keeping costs down and being as DIY as possible.
