Hong Kong Pro Democracy

Logo design for a Hong Kong pro-democracy campaign.

The logo consists of two fists representing speech marks. This illustrates the power of speech – highlighting that the people of Hong Kong should have their say, the power should be to the people.

Orange is used as it is highly visible and catches attention. It also has connotations of motivation, positivity, youth and independence, all linking with the core message of the campaign for democracy.

In Chinese culture, orange is an indication of change, which is what the people are pushing for.
The central theme of the campaign is about giving a voice to the voiceless, speaking up for those who don’t have a say. The campaigns slogans are “Speech is Power” and “Shout for Hong Kong”. The basis of the campaign is a social media activity. A photo filter on Snapchat and Instagram morphs the users selfie, giving them an abnormally big mouth, resulting in someone shouting out with a massive mouth. Sharing these photos on social media with the hashtag #SHOUT4HK gives support and a voice to the people of Hong Kong, who don’t have one. This combines humour with a serious message making it more likely to spread.
