Visual sociology video project

Foster care homes and current issues
Visual sociology

This project was created during my third year studies in Vilnius Academy of Arts. The aim of the project was to make a visual sociology themed video while working in groups of two.

What is visual sociology? It's an intriguing report of an exciting, relevant
topic. And, of course, research visualisation that conveys the data and research message in an interesting, intriguing, captivating and at the same time readable, focused, clear way. Visual sociology has very close connections with visual journalism (media), only the research is more focused on social issues, social or anthropological insights.

The topic of the project was "ROCK & ROLL or are youth revolutions still possible?"
We chose to talk about current issues that are common for Lithuanian foster care homes, get an insight of the current situation, the new upcoming changes and problems that are still looked upon in this environment. Our respondents were - currently retired guard, employees of the foster care homes, some politicians and a guy that grew up in this environment, who we chose to portray as the main character in our short animation. All the answers were put into a story that the main character is telling though out the animation.

With this project and all the answers from the respondents we understood that the biggest problem children who grow up in the foster homes experience is not the foster care environment itself, but the psychological trauma they have to manage from the family environment they've lived in the past, the lack of love and support of a close one.

My part was to make the animation, as well the background environment, i've used watercolor paintings which then were cut out and animated. Meanwhile my partner was responsible of making the main characters - birds, some prop items and choosing the sound.

(Posted video only includes the animation, without speakers voice, who told the story).
